THE eAPPLE The electronic Apple uses visual language to describe and rappresent informations about the sourranding area. It reacts to people entering and exiting a space retaining information on how many persons are in the room at any given time. A bite is taken from the apple for each person entering while a bite is returned to the apple for each person leaving. The information is also logged on a server and used for a wap version of the Apple (thanks to Konrad Wrona!). Anyone can consult the apple on their phone Screen at any time and get an immediate feel for the presence of people in the space. The information given by the image remains anonymous unless people would like to make themselves recognizable by wearing specific tags. The use of tags would aloud the application to recognize people from their Id and therefore more detailed information could be logged on. Specific changes in the image can be taylored to represent a particular person. IMPLEMENTATION: The eApple demo-application is implemented in java, using two infrared sensors connected to the serial port of the computer monitoring the entrance of the third floor of MediaLabEurope. When someone enters the room, the sensors are broken in a specific order that suggests someone has just walked into the space and the image is updated in real time. For every person coming in, a bite is taken from the apple; for anyone leaving, a bite goes back to the apple. A crunching soundattracts the attention of the audience to the dispaly where the image is updated, so they can chatch the fruit while bitten.
